Editor's Note
𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑽𝒂𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 is a film that has given me a new perspective on filmmaking. It has taught me about the potential a simplistic idea holds in any form of art and how the ability of a film to be impactful often lies in its simplicity. And to be able to take such a premise and have the opportunity to do it justice along with a magnificent team of collaborators is why we do what we do.
At its core, my newest film, this film is about a woman who is frustrated with her job and the way she is treated at it by her co-workers. Even though the film is supposed to be a comedy, it touches upon important corporate work culture issues faced today by many individuals in which the monthly salary acts as a drug to numb you of the toxic work environment.
Editorially, my approach was to find comedic beats and establish them further by manipulating timing. I learned that to make a joke land effectively, the premise (aka the setup) should be made as clean, clear, and simple as possible. This is followed by delivering an effective punch just at the right time. I learned that comedy is generated by breaking rules, rules that are already clearly developed and established in the audience's mind.
Something I tried to do is quicken the pace of scenes as much as I could and made that my starting point. After that, I tried to slow it down - and thereby find the appropriate sweet spot in the pacing.
I also got a chance to cut a musical action sequence with this project which was also extremely rewarding and fun.
